π Arrive for Refreshments & Ceremony
Time: 3:00 PM
Location: Terrell Farm
Address: 3789 Hoover Hill Rd. Trinity, NC 27370
Details: We will have a Quaker ceremony where everyone who feels moved is invited to share a few words of love and encouragement.
The Quaker wedding ceremony is unprogrammed, meaning everyone who feels moved is invited to speak. These messages are often succinct meditations on love, marriage, and commitment. Be yourselvesβbe joyful or fun or cry your eyes outβbut know this is not a time for wild college stories or inside jokes. If you do choose to speak (it is completely optional), there is no expectation that you prepare written remarks; in fact Quakers believe the best messages are spoken from the heart in the inspiration of the moment. In practice it's hard not to think about what you'll say beforehandβ that's OK! We just hope the ceremony will feel like a time for honest reflection rather than a chance to take turns giving formal speeches. At the end of the ceremony, all in attendance will sign our marriage certificate to signify the role our community played in the ceremony. We are so grateful that all of you β with the gift of your words and your presence β will surround us with love and make our union official.
What drew us to this structure for our weddingβbeyond Joseph's religious backgroundβis the democratic ethos of the ceremony: in Quakerism the couple is married not by a single officiant, but by the gathered community. When we were first falling in love, we noticed and admired in each other a mutual focus on staying close, in heart and spirit, to our friends around the country. We believe that our marriage joins not only ourselves and our families but these two national webs of special people. It feels fitting for the structure of our wedding ceremony itself to reflect our shared belief in the importance of this group β all of you! β to the success of our marriage.
